happy halloween!
hazel has been talking about this halloween since LAST halloween, and has even settled on WONDER WOMAN as her costume of choice for a few months now. cora loves being like hazel, so of course she quickly picked a superhero too. for the first year ever, i made NOTHING, and just bought all of our costumes online! pregnancy miracle!

over the years, i have gone ALL OUT with halloween costumes, and this year was no exception. johns cloud - so many hot glue-gun burns.
we used to go more nerdy, see previous years:
2012 - i think this was a morning sickness fail
but this time decided to go more mainstream. my girls are OBSESSED with trolls right now, just like every other 2-10 year-old in north america. so you can guess what we were...

halloween duds
this year for halloween, we were probably more mainstream than ever before. (usually we dress up as something that's more vintage, as seen here and here.) of course, there was also this more "classic" year, and this year, which was easily recognized by some (the cool people), and then totally lost on others (the not-so-cool people ;).
thanks to pokemon go, we had no problem being recognized this year. anyways, without further ado, ash ketchum, misty, pikachu and squirtle.

this pumpkin's fixin' to be carved.
i considered painting pumpkins this year. it probably would have been just as messy, but certainly not as nostalgic for me. i'm glad we chose to carve.
cora was a ham for the "real" camera, way more than she ever is with my phone. i guess i need to bring my real camera out more!

happy halloween from the guardians of the galaxy!
for halloween this year we were the guardians of the galaxy. i really felt nerdy last night at the ward party when people said, "oh, i haven't seen that movie".
what?!?! it's like the best movie of all time! and (i thought) so mainstream!
nevertheless, we loved playing our favorite heroes this year. i only wish i hadn't painted my face green, since only 30% of the people at the party recognized me anyways ;)

halloween.
if you're like me, then you decided not to do a costume this year. then, you decided the day before halloween that you didn't want to be lame and at least should spend a couple hours and make your daughter a costume. and then, you decide because you are making her a costume that it won't be too much trouble to also make a costume for yourself, and before you know it, your husband feels very left out on halloween night. and you end up spending some time figuring out what he's going to be, and getting him a costume put together, and eating dinner, and before you know it, all the good light is gone and you have to use flash for the only halloween pictures you will have for this year. and you miss most of the carnival and only make it to the outdoor movie. sigh. halloween this year was kind of a bust, but at least hazel looked cute. and at least she's too young to really know any better :) better costume years can be seen here and here.
also, hazel's costume went with both john's and mine, so that's kind of like having a family costume, right?

happy halloween!
what are you doing for halloween? we have been to a couple parties and we will probably (?) go up to salt lake this evening to see my family in their halloween costumes! this has to be the most involved costume john and i have ever done, but it is also one of my favorites. it took my mom and i many hours of planning and sewing, a lot of time myself crafting {the shield itself took 3 hours. am i nuts?!}, but in the end, so so worth it. {we won best costume at our ward party. woot woot! ;} we are super big nerds.
also, hazel was really super happy to be flying.

i love you. i know.
on friday, my mom made another one of a bajillion and a half sacrifices she has made for me in my life. she made the coolest costumes ever, thus enabling john and i to fulfill our secret dreams of becoming han solo and princess leia for a day. the costumes were awesome, and i can only claim assisting in the cutting-out of the fabric. my mom is quite the seamstress even though she would never say so herself.
then john and i went to an epic murder mystery party with friends. when i was young i imagined myself as a great murder detective. and still, as an adult, i like to watch murder-mystery shows such as bones, monk, psych, the mentalist, etc. well, i thought i would be an expert at catching the killer, but guess who caught the murderer? no one. no one got it right. and i was probably the most confused of all. i actually accused my husband of being the killer, if you want to know that truth. quite lame of me, huh.
we also got to show off our costumes at the ward party {hence the cultural-hall background in these pictures}.
i think john and i were a perfect han and leia couple, if i do say so myself. i enjoy the famous line in the empire strikes back : "i love you" "i know". {and here's a link to the scene, if you get a certain kind of nerdy thrill out of watching it like i do} i think that funny line sums up our relationship pretty well.

when your husband served a mission in taiwan, and you need a last-minute costume for the ward party, black hairspray and two authentic taiwanese shirts should do the trick.
